2023 Polygon 3 Grenache, Alkina

Barossa, South Australia, Australia

Alkina have painstakingly explored the ancient soils in their biodynamically certified vineyard with terroir expert consultant Pedro Parra. Pedro has dug thousands of soil bits but has only seen this particular combination of schist and limestone twice. From a tiny 0.274-hectare parcel of approximately 200 vines comes Polygon 3, with shallow red-brown earth over deep sedimentary limestone interspersed with fractured schist. Fruit was hand-picked, fermented in concrete with 80% whole bunch, and basket pressed after 30 days on skins. It matured in a 700 litre concrete egg before bottling. The wine shows a distinct chalky texture, is full of bright red fruit, and is reticent when first opened, so decanting, or some air, is advised.
