2023 Polygon 22 Grenache, Alkina
Barossa, South Australia, Australia
The Polygons are the tiny distinct plots identified by terroir expert Pedro Parra at Alkina’s biodynamically certified vineyard in Greenock, Barossa. Polygon 22 is a small trip of 220 younger bush vines, planted on contours of fractured schist and a small (but powerful) amount of limestone. Pedro claims to have only encountered this combination of soils twice in his career mapping many great vineyards of the world. There’s a subtle lifted red petal note and savoury edge here, with a core of transparent, succulent darker berry fruit. The grapes are hand harvested, and the entire ferment was whole-bunch, spending 26 days on skins before basket pressing. It was matured in a single 700 litre concrete egg.
