2024 Mercurey 1er Cru 'Pièce 15' Blanc, Domaine Bruno Lorenzon
Côte Chalonnaise, Burgundy, France
The origins of Pièce 15 stem from an idea to take fruit from 15 different parcels that lie within the Champs Martin thus creating an almost chef-like essence of Champs Martin. Bruno doesn’t always use the full 15 parcels that he could. He has to feel they merit inclusion. For example, in ’24 he only used 9 and as a result only made 4 barrels. He also doesn’t feel that by separating out the fruit from these parcels he is lessening the ‘basic’ Champs Martin blend in any way. More that he is creating something additional that is special and unique with an intensity that can only come from such small production. And tasting this remarkable wine, it’s hard to disagree with his perspective. It has that small berry intensity one sometimes sees in some of the Grands Crus from the Côte d’Or, and there is a lift and fluidity that is absolute seamless from start to finish. It moves across the palate like a thoroughbred across the grass at Newmarket, effortlessly, with a deceptive pace and stride. There is a crescendo of matière at the finish, yet the great finesse remains intact. Gorgeous and something of a triumph. Drink from 2032
