2018 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru, Domaine Taupenot-Merme
Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, France
Mazoyères lies to the east of Charmes and has a soil which
is denser and more powerful. Romain has just under a
hectare of this and his decision to split his Charmes and his
Mazoyères was quite progressive at the time. Over the past
few years Mazoyères has been forging its own independent
identity and reputation and has consequently moved itself
up the Grand Cru hierarchy. This is another fine example
from Romain, showing more power and structural presence
than the Charmes. The vines here are now sixty years old and
the fruit is slightly darker and earthier; its overall character
arguably more masculine. There is more underlying tannin
but it’s well integrated and the whole thing is very together
and projects both length and longevity. This is a serious wine.
