2020 Art Series, Shiraz, Leeuwin Estate

Margaret River, Western Australia, Australia

Not for nothing has Jancis (among others) suggested to Simone that this should be labelled Syrah. It’s a fragrant, aérien wine albeit with plenty of juicy fruit and silky tannins. Expect a gamut of aromas including tapenade, black cherry, redcurrant and mint. Remarkably, Leeuwin briefly stopped making an Art Series Shiraz but it’s enjoyed a renaissance here under Simone and winemaker Tim Lovett – and the wine seems to get better and better with every vintage. The majority of the fruit hails from Peppy Park, a slightly warmer site some 20km from the winery. The 2020 benefits from a judicious 20% whole-bunch fermentation – accentuating its lift and freshness – and raised in 30% new oak barrels. Drink 2024-2034
