Sicily
The jewel in the crown of Sicilian winemaking is the Etna DOC, where the local Nerello Mascalese and Carricante are as perfectly suited to the spectacular volcanic terroir – and as capable of expressing its nuances – as Nebbiolo in Barolo or Sangiovese in Brunello. Vineyards in the north-west of the island can be a good source of inexpensive, characterful wines made from grape varieties such as Grillo and Nero d’Avola.
