2020 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Angles, Olivier Leflaive

This lies on the northern edge of the appellation, bordering Pommard where the soil is a touch richer. It is produced from a single parcel of vines aged from between 12 years and 70 years, providing a complex mix of energetic and intense fruit flavours. There is plenty of matière here, with yields down 40%. Franck has used 50% whole bunch, adding freshness and verve, and a mix of new (33%) and older barrels. A Volnay with both substance and fragrance.
