2016 Failla BRUT 2G , Failla Wines
Sonoma County, California, USA
2016 is only the second vintage of Failla’s sparkling wine and is made with a 50% blend of each Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The grapes are whole cluster pressed, before being sent to various containers and concrete eggs alongside Australian oak foudres and barrels The 2016 was disgorged in 2021 after 42 months on lees and has a tiny production of only 406 cases. All the fruit comes from Bohan vineyard, which was planted by George Bohan in the 80’s with his own field blend. Sitting at 1400 ft, it is in the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA between the Hirsch Vineyard and the Estate. Failla began sourcing from George in 2011 and are always thrilled to have his company on the crush pad. The 2016 vintage saw a welcome relief from drought, with a mild spring followed by a warm but steady growing season. The crop was balanced, healthy and beautifully clean. The wines of 2016 show the elegant, classic savory side of the true Sonoma Coast. It is an elegant sparkling wine with a deeply layered expression of coastal terroir. A fine mousse leads to a rich palate of cream, fresh berries, and brioche. This sparkler shines brightest paired with food.
