The Lafouge family have been making wine in Auxey since the 17th century, so they know a thing or two about the terroir here, including the 0.4-hectare, south-west-facing Climat du Val. 2020 may have been a warm, dry vintage, but the best of the reds show surprising freshness — emphasised in this case by a judicious 20% whole bunch. The estate has been given fresh impetus by the return of Gilles Lafouge’s talented son Maxime, who is gradually assuming greater responsibility.
