2023 Nebbiolo d’Alba DOC Superiore San Sebastiano, Cascina Penna-Currado

The Nebbiolo d'Alba from Penna-Currado is made using the older vines from their Bricco Lago vineyard, and is made in very limited quantities in a similar way to their Barolo, including 12 months in large oak casks before bottling. The area of San Sebastiano, chosen by Luca and Elena when they established the Cascina, had always been thought to be too cool for Barolo production, hence its exclusion from the DOCG. But now, this cooler site is ideal for crafting elegant and ethereal Nebbiolo, keeping just on the al dente side of ripeness, and making this the proper bargain of their range. Naturally bright acidity is matched by carefully managed fine tannins, and there's a core of gorgeous lavender scented dark berry fruit on the nose and palate.
