2018 Roero Riserva Roche d'Ampsej, Az. Ag. Matteo Correggia

The 2017 Ròche d’Ampsèj was one of the standout wines of last year’s Stannary Italian tasting so we approached the 2018 with high expectations – which were duly met! Matteo Correggia bought the eponymous vineyard in 1996 having identified it as one of the greatest in Roero, not least because of its high clay content (unusual for the region), which produces a notably dense and powerful wine easily mistaken for a Barolo from, for example, Serralunga. Grapes from this parcel undergo a much longer maceration (up to sixty days) and the wine is raised in cask for 14 months with a further two years bottleageing prior to release.
