2021 Los Alamos Vineyard Pinot Noir, Chanin
Santa Barbara County, California, USA
If Sanford & Benedict is the most famous vineyard in Santa Barbara County, than Los Alamos is the least famous, but Gavin has a clear soft spot for this overperforming vineyard. It is located at a high elevation in the vineyard on calcaric shale and limestone. Farming at this vineyard changed in 2005, which is now paying off. It is open knit with plenty of wild strawberry fruit around a kernel of energy that takes a long time to unfurl, there are plenty of savoury notes to balance the vibrant red fruit. Concentrated yet lively with a velvety long finish. Gavin loves this and said ‘this is delicious young but it will surprise you with age. If you can bear it, cellar it for 15 years and you will be surprised’
