Hubert de Montille was one of the legends of Burgundy. His small domaine in Volnay had an extremely loyal band of followers. Since his son, Etienne, took over the reins the domaine has changed almost unrecognisably and is now 7 times the size with vineyards all over the Côte d’Or, including some very precious Malconsorts in Vosne-Romanée. The evolution has been as impressive as it has been dramatic. Working closely alongside Etienne is Brian Sieve, the Californian winemaker with a great feel for making refined, elegant wines. Together the two also manage a small négoce label called Maison Deux Montille which focusses on making steely, crystalline white wines from affordable appellations. The range makes an excellent foil for the mainly red wines under the Domaine label.
