2023 Chardonnay, La Falize

It’s immediately clear on the nose what a sophisticated wine the 2023 Chardonnay from La Falize is. There’s a hint of reduction that soon blows off to reveal bright white fruit, saline and hazelnut aromas. The oak (100% new Françoise Frères) is prominent but certainly not overwhelming at this early stage. The palate is finely balanced, combining impressive weight and depth, owing to 2023’s warm growing season, with La Falize’s customary freshness and energy. Expect a saline, mineral thread to hove into view on the long, cleansing finish. As we’ve said of previous vintages, the 2023 is a truly world-class Chardonnay that happens to come from Belgium. It’s a touch rounder and more approachable than early vintages from the estate, but still, the ‘23 will require another couple of years at least to begin showing its best.
