2023 Chassagne-Montrachet, Domaine Ballot-Millot
Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, France
Charles, who represents the 16th generation since 1630, took over from his father Philippe Ballot at the start of the new millenium, although his father was still quite youthful at that time. Wines spend 12 months in barrel and then a further 4-6 months in steel so that they get a second winter in the cellar. Charles is quite sparing with new oak, generally keeping to 15/20%. The fruit is vibrant, with delicate notes of stone fruit and a gentle pinch of spice to add nuances. This is mouthwatering, with a refreshing salinity.
