The de Boüard family have been in Bordeaux since 1544, and Angelus began in 1922, when Elisabeth Bouchet, the second wife of Maurice de Boüard de La Forest, purchased a 3.5ha vineyard known as Clos L’Angelus. Her name now adorns an incredibly rare and exclusive bottling of Cabernet Franc that still even most people at the estate are yet to experience. The estate takes its name from the fact that workers in the vineyard would hear the bells from three neighbouring churches each day. Descendant Hubert de Boüard took over the business in the late 1980s, having studied in Bordeaux under legendary Emile Peynaud. He started employing other techniques that were popular in Burgundy but were not widely used at the time in Bordeaux, and quality soared. Innovation continues at the estate, with the introduction of some brilliant wines that offer a taste of this grand estate at a fraction of the price, including Clos de Milieu from Castillon and the delicious Tempo d’Angelus.
