Set high on the remote slopes of Piekenierskloof at nearly 800 metres above sea level, Tierhoek is one of South Africa’s most distinctive vineyard sites. This mixed farm was purchased by the current owners in the early 2000s, and combines old-vine Chenin Blanc, including parcels planted in 1977, with Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Rhône varieties, all planted across a breathtaking mountain landscape. Cool temperatures, constant winds and significant altitude bring freshness and tension to the wines, while the site itself has long attracted some of the Cape’s most respected winemaking talent. Mention Piekenierskloof to any winemaker and expect a passionate, glassy-eyed response. Today, under the stewardship of Shelley Sandell and her enthusiastic son Harry, Tierhoek is entering an exciting new phase, producing wines that capture both the personality of the vineyard and the extraordinary potential of this singular place. Renowned winemakers from famous wineries like Hamilton Russell collaborate with the farmers here to make a brilliant range of wines under the Tierhoek brand.
