Tesselaarsdal

Tesselaarsdal was started in 2015 and takes its name from the Overberg village where Berene was born and raised. The village itself is named after East India Company settler Johannes Tesselar, who gave the land to his freed slaves when he died in 1810. Berene is a descendent of one of those slaves, and depicts her grandmother at home in the village on the intricate label of her Tesselaarsdal wines. She’s even putting pressure on the local authorities to make Tesselaarsdal an official Wine of Origin.

Berene makes the wines in the cellars of Hamiton-Russell, and still holds down a day job at the estate. She came to wine slightly by accident, starting out as an au pair for the children of Anthony Hamiton-Russell at age 19.

With Anthony’s mentorship, since 2015 Berene’s wines have got better and better, and now garner significant acclaim, with more than one comparison to Burgundy. Pristine, classical, cool and maritime-influenced, hers is a delicious Pinot Noir we can highly recommend.
