Piedrasassi

Central Coast , USA

Piedrasassi produces a select range of single-vineyard Syrahs from California’s Central Coast, each reflecting the unique terroirs of their respective vineyards. The wines are crafted with minimal intervention, showcasing the cool-climate influence and diverse soils of the region.

Founded by winemaker Sashi Moorman and baker Melissa Sorongon, the estate emphasizes ecological responsibility and a deep connection to the land. The vineyards are situated in east-west transverse valleys, benefiting from diverse soils and the cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean. Syrah is the only variety, and they use whole-bunch, wild yeasts and maturation in large format oak to create characterful, expressive wines. Minimal sulfur is used, and the wines are neither fined nor filtered, allowing for a pure expression of the fruit and place.

“PS” is their entry level Syrah from Santa Barbara County and a brilliant introduction to the Piedrasassi style, with crunchy red and black fruit, black olive and smoky bacon.

The Santa Rita Hills Syrah is from cool sites, with soft, wild fruit and flowers, chalky textures and hints of graphite.

Their Bien Nacido Syrah, from the historic vineyard, includes fruit from 50 year old vines. Wild, gamey, with lifted purple flowers, it’s silky on the palate with cleansing acidity.

Rim Rock Syrah is from the Arroyo Grande Valley, with leathery, charred meat complexity, bergamot and liquorice on the nose, and powerful structure.
