Nebbiolo
It’s one of the world's great red grape varieties but unlike Pinot or Cabernet, Nebbiolo is synonymous with one region and one region only: Piedmont, in the lee of the Alps in North West Italy. The finest examples are at once ethereal and exceptionally age-worthy. Barolo is the most celebrated source but wines from the neighbouring DOCG of Barbaresco (where the soil tends to be lighter) tend to be more charming on release. There is also currently much excitement about Nebbiolo from the remote vineyards of Alto Piemonte, including Gattinara and Ghemme, where it is known as Spanna.
