The reins of Domaine Balthazar passed from father René, to son, Franck, in 2002 but the domaine has retained its reputation as a producer of classic, authentic Cornas. The two hectare domaine has been in the family since the first world war but the current plans are for a very gradual expansion with a tenth of a hectare being planted yearly over a five year period.
The wines tend to be well scented and this is no exception with dark fruits dominating both nose and palate and violets evident on the nose. Balthazar makes wine for the long term, with average vintages showing themselves after about five years but a vintage like 2005 having the potential to last for twenty years.
