Interview 1

Alexandrine Roy
Domaine Marc Roy
Gevrey-Chambertin

27 year old Alexandrine Roy is busy making a name for herself in Gevrey-Chambertin. Now in charge of the 5 hectare family estate she is receiving high praise both locally and internationally for her elegant Pinot Noirs. Despite being mid-harvest she has kindly agreed to be our first interviewee for our new section on winemakers and other influential figures in the wine world.

1. Which is the wine of which you are most proud?

I am equally proud of all my wines, because I give the same care and intensive work for each, which I hope you can see when you taste them.

2. What is the finest bottle that you have ever drunk?

It is a very difficult question; they are so many impressive wines! But I particularly like the wines coming from Griotte-Chambertin and Les Grands Échezeaux.

3. What do you think about the 2006 vintage?

2006 has been a vintage of "vinegrower"; Indeed, if the work has been done carefully during the whole year, there is no problem. The wines have got a lot of fruits, are very deep yet at the same time are delicate. Where they are successful, the 2006s are just beautiful!

4. Outside of Burgundy, what is the most exciting wine region at present?

It would be the Champagne region, because Champagne is the most fashionable drink which is consumed all around the world (and it is produced only in Champagne region).

5. What would you be doing if you weren't a winemaker?

I think I would still be in the wine business anyway; perhaps a sommelier?

6. Why should someone visit Burgundy?

In Burgundy, there are a lot of things which make this place unique: the countryside with the vineyards of course, but also the beauty of Dijon and Beaune, the Pinot noir capital. It has a rich culture and history, beautiful monuments, and, of course, fantastic wines, pairing very well with the local gastronomy!

7. What are your thoughts on current wine prices?

It is like with a lot of things: some are reasonable and some are crazy!

8. Are you ever influenced by Robert Parker/other wine journalists?

No. They wouldn't be a factor in me choosing a wine. Everybody has got their own palate, taste and sensibility. So we won't have the same palate as some journalists, and maybe we won't like the same things; I tasted already some "Parkerized" wines, and they weren't my favourites…

9 .What has been your toughest challenge as a vigneron?

My biggest challenge is every year, trying to produce top-quality wine whilst respecting the vintage.

10. Who has had the greatest influence over your career?

My father.

11.What are your ambitions for Domaine Roy?

I want to try and find some 1er Cru or Grand Cru to extend the range of wines we produce (at the moment we only have village appellation - Gevrey-Chambertin "Vieilles Vignes", Gevrey-Chambertin "Clos Prieur", Gevrey-Chambertin "Cuvée Alexandrine" and in white, Marsannay "Les Champs Perdrix").

12. Have you noticed the influence of climate change in Burgundy?

I don't think so; all the climatic conditions we've had (like in 2003) have been already seen in the past. And we don't have heatwaves every year! (the proof with 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007!)

13. Do you think that men and women make a different style of wine?

It is not only men and women who produce different styles of wine, it is each winemaker (male or female) who will produce his or her own style.

14. Have you noticed any changes in export markets? Russia or the far East for example?

We have had a lot of propositions to work in foreign markets in the last few years (Canada, Japan, Denmark, Brazil), but Russia and the Far East have yet to come on board.

15. Have you considered using plastic corks or screwcaps? Would you ever use plastic bottles?

Never!

16. What would you would serve your wines with...?

Gevrey-Chambertin pairs very well with game (venison or boar) but also grilled red meats such as beef or lamb, wild mushrooms and all kinds of cheeses, soft and hard..
