Ambitious and driven, Alexandrine Roy, Marc’s daughter, is on a mission to put her family’s domaine firmly on the map. With no Premiers or Grands Crus within her portfolio (or not yet at any rate) she has no option but to achieve this through simply making stand out village wine. Five years on she is doing just that.
To her advantage, she is blessed with some fine plots of village Gevrey, including a parcel of old vines in what is probably Gevrey’s best vineyard at this level, Clos Prieur.
She makes two village Gevreys, one from a mix of old vine plots and one specifically from the Clos Prieur site.
The wines are made in a very traditional style; thankfully Alexandrine is not a fan of the extracted, black-coloured wines that seem more and more commonplace in this part of the Côte de Nuits. In fact it would be fair to say the wines have a touch of femininity about them which makes for a nice contrast with the powerful style of the appellation. They show good purity and harmony and an appealing sense of poise. Aside from making the wines taste delicious these qualities also allow them to be approached in their relative youth.
From the 2005 vintage onwards Alexandrine has produced a special cuvée made from a selection of barrels that she felt had something special about them. Called Cuvée Alexandrine it resembles a 1er Cru in all but name and provides a suitably impressive flagship for the domaine.
