This is a family domaine in the true sense of the phrase. Bernard’s eldest son, Alex, now runs things with help from both his brother, Benoît, and his father. You phone the domaine and either Alex’s mother or his wife when she isn’t helping out at Domaine Dujac, will answer the phone. You pitch up at stumps after a hard day of tastings and you’ll have a cool glass of beer thrust into your hand and be urged to sit and chew the fat with the family. This is what Burgundy is all about. That and the wines. And here it’s not just the hospitality that blows you away; it’s the wines, too.

Since Alex succeeded his father he has both expanded the domaine and moved it up a notch. He has an impressive range of 1ers Crus in his portfolio each of which expresses its individual character. If he has changed one thing since taking it over it is probably a move towards wines of greater poise and tension. Their tautness and vitality really entice the palate yet they have enough weight and concentration to last for many years. There seems to be little doubt that this is now amongst the finest domaines in the village with the potential to make further progress. Prices still offer great value, so don’t hesitate to give them a try.
