Marsannay lies to the north of Gevrey-Chambertin and generally is overshadowed by its much more illustrious neighbour. However, there appears to be a new breed of ambitious young growers anxious to put their village on the map. Laurence Fournier is one such man. Having recently taken over from his father, Laurence is getting terrific concentration out of his wines without resorting to the kind of extracted, over manipulation that Parker seems to admire in this part of Burgundy. Careful, diligent work in the vineyard, low yields and confident handling in the cellar results in “minerality”, “intensity”, “length”, “complexity” featuring regularly in one’s tasting notes. These are lovely wines from someone who we will all be hearing much more about in the coming years. Quantities are limited as Laurence’s wines are already in massive demand, a sure sign of high quality.
