Yves Confuron, who also makes the wines at Domaine de Courcel in Pommard, has been in charge at his family domaine now for some time, following the retirement of his father Jacky. Exceptionally hard working and dedicated Yves has strong opinions on winemaking but never has a cheeky smile far from his face. Unaffected by the whims of fashion when it comes to work, either in the vineyard or in the cellar, Yves relies on his low yielding, late picked old vines to do the business for him. That is not to say his work in the cellar is unimportant, more that his role is to nurture the wines so that they express the character of the vineyards.
Traditionally these wines have been somewhat unyielding in youth. However, in recent years Yves has put more flesh on the bones, making them more approachable in their youth than previously but without compromising their potential to age, even at village level. New oak is kept to a a minimum, which partly explains the unflashy nature of the wines in barrel, and the wines are bottled relatively late. What comes across when talking to Yves about his wines is his innate understanding of each vintage’s characterisitics, especially in comparison to each other and it is perhaps this that allows him to adapt his work in the cellar most appropriately from vintage to vintage.

His last three vintages have been hugely successful, especially so 2007 and this is now amongst the finest domaines in the village.
