This is a domaine on a steep upward curve ever since Charles Ballot took over from his father, Philippe, five years ago. Although there are several red appellations in the domaine’s portfolio, the emphasis is very much on the white wines. In style they are all about balance, poise and minerality, avoiding the heaviness that some Meursaults can fall prey to. Dedicated work in the vineyards helps the wines express their terroir and strict pruning (rather than green harvesting) ensures low yields, which result in very concentrated wines. New oak is used sparingly and the work in the cellars in unmanipulative to allow the intricacies of the wines to blossom. These are lovely Meursaults and if Charles continues to progress then he will have few peers in this appellation.
In 2007 Charles really nailed his reds and we have bought them for the first time as well his serious whites.
